Our Mission
RDO challenges and enlightens public perception of older people through musical presentations performed by seasoned artists for audiences of all ages. RDO envisions a future where an individual’s perceived abilities are not defined by their numeric age.

For years, founder Debra Gilroy envisioned an opera company where singers over the age of 55 are given the opportunity to perform; a company where age has no limit. At long last, in 2019, Raison d’Etre Opera became a non-profit organization. Through the ups and downs of Covid this vision endured, culminating in our inaugural concert during the fall of 2024. Over the course of the following months, RDO presented a reading of the opera, “The Village Singer, by Stephen Paulus, two fundraising events, a Holiday Soirée in December, and That’s Amore in February. Our season culminated in May with performances of our first fully staged opera, The Village Singer.
We have an exciting upcoming season planned! Following our fundraising events with Frederica von Stade, we will present small group programs to retirement and nursing facilities through a generous Mission Grant from the Deaconess Community of the ELCA in October, and also next March, November brings Veteran’s Day concerts and December, Holiday Soirées. In January, we will launch our education/outreach program with performances of “Bremen Town Musicians” by John Davies. Our successful benefit concert, That’s Amore, will again be presented in February. Our season finale will be a fully staged performance of The Mother of us All, composed by Virgil Thomson to a libretto by Gertrude Stein.
All this and more we hope will help us accomplish our mission statement: RDO challenges and enlightens public perception of older people through musical presentations performed by seasoned artists for audiences of all ages. RDO envisions a future where an individual’s perceived abilities are not defined by their numeric age.
